Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced that Allison Armstrong will be the new chief of the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department at a press conference on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Chief Brian Byrd’s retirement is effective December 11, 2021 .
Chief Armstrong is the first woman to lead the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department.
Chief Armstrong has worked for the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department for 21 years. During his tenure with TFRD
she rose through the ranks with her most recent position as Battalion Chief, Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Chief Armstrong is an Ohio State Licensed Registered Nurse and Nationally Registered Paramedic. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy College in NW Ohio and has a Master of Science in Health Informatics from the University of Cincinnati.
“Chef Armstrong was the best choice. She has experience in all facets of operations and demonstrates great leadership and management skills,” said Mayor Kapszukiewicz.
“She is unwavering in her dedication to the firefighters who serve our community every day despite the dangers they may face, and she is committed to building a diverse and inclusive service. I have confidence in his courage and professionalism to lead our department, especially in these difficult times.
Chief Armstrong comes from a family of public servants. His father was a member of the Toledo Police Department for 25 years.
“My professional background and my reputation in the community underscores the fact that I am committed to lifelong learning and building relationships. As your leader, I am dedicated to making the TFRD the best and most successful organization possible,” said Chief Armstrong.
Chief Armstrong has been playing ice hockey for the Toledo Fire hockey team since she was hired in 2000. Her team currently participates in tournaments and games to raise money for charitable causes. Chief Armstrong is married to a retired member of the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department who served 33 years, and they have one son.
Chief Allison Armstrong will take office on February 4, 2022.
