Leland, Somonauk School Consolidation Issue Goes to Ballot June 28 – Shaw Local

The Illinois State Superintendent of Schools earlier this month approved the proposal to merge the Somonauk and Leland school districts, which means the question will be asked in the June 28 primary ballot for the district voters decide.

Both school district school boards approved the consolidation on the ballot. Additionally, a public hearing was held at the La Salle County Government Complex with the regional office of education.

The referendum must pass in the Somonauk and Leland school districts for the merger to go through.

“Combining the two districts would help us provide students with better academic opportunities, as well as more extracurricular opportunities, while being more efficient for taxpayers,” Mike Short, chairman of the Somonauk School Board, said in a statement. hurry.

School boards believe they will be able to provide more teaching opportunities, extracurricular activities, and better respond to a teacher shortage through consolidation.

The State of Illinois would provide $1.1 million for consolidation. These funds would be used to align existing contracts with personnel, transportation costs and other immediate consolidation costs.

Savings would eventually be realized by only needing one superintendent, one athletic director, one audit, being able to purchase services as a single entity, and adjusting staff through attrition . Taxpayers would only see a slight drop in their rate.

If consolidation were to go through both districts, a new school board would be elected in the November 2022 general election. The first seven voters, regardless of residency, will sit on the new board.

“We want to build on the relationship we already have to create opportunities for our students, as well as respond to the changing education landscape,” said Claire Anderson, chair of the Leland School Board.

The councils have created a website with frequently asked questions and more information about consolidation at https://sites.google.com/somonauk.net/stronger-together/home for more information.
