Public can weigh in on consolidation of Springfield elementary schools
The Springfield School District 186 School Board will hold three public meetings on a proposal to construct a new school building that would house three elementary schools.
The construction is one of a series of projects that are part of the 1% sales tax hike approved by Sangamon County voters in November 2018. The windfall can only go to upgrades or construction facilities, safety upgrades or removal of construction obligations.

The new facility would combine Hazel Dell, Laketown and Southern View elementary schools. The original plan only talked about Hazel Dell and Laketown.
The issue is expected to be addressed at Monday’s school board meeting, although no agenda has been released.
Here are the details of the three public hearings:
- Hazel Dell Elementary, 850 West Lake Shore Drive, 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29;
- Southern View Elementary, 3338 S. Fifth St., 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 6;
- Laketown Elementary School, 1825 Lee Street, 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12.
The same presentation will be shared at each of the hearings.
