Michigan earns upset victory over No. 2 Ohio State in non-conference action

ANN ARBOUR, Mich. — The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team swept No. 2-ranked Ohio State, 4-0, Friday night (March 18) in an off conference at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The doubles was hotly contested across all courts, with Michigan claiming the point with wins at numbers 2 and 3. The combination of Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young earned a break on the two to make it 3-1 before holding on for a 6-3 triumph at No. 2. At No. 3, the duo of Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney clinched the doubles point for Maize and Blue, breaking serve for a 6-4 victory.

In singles action, UM were able to pick up first-set wins at No. 2, 5 and 6. Beaty did a solid job at No. 6, taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory, before Styler put the corn and blue on the edge of the team gains ground at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Styler closed out the victory with an ace about to deuce to upset No. 8-ranked Cannon Kingsley.

No. 72-ranked Jacob Bickersteth won the game with an upset win (6-4, 6-4) over No. 26 James Trotter at No. 5 to hand the Buckeyes their first shutout loss since March 1, 2020.

No. 57-ranked Andrew Fenty took an early 4-0 lead over No. 5-ranked Matej Vocul to No. 1 but lost six straight to lose the set. He managed to bounce back in the second set with a 6-3 victory and had won the first game in the third before the match was clinched.

The victory was UM’s second straight win against their longtime rival at home, having been held winless against the Buckeyes since 2001 before last season’s victory.

Michigan will return to the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday, March 20 when they host No. 6 Baylor at 2 p.m. in a 2019 NCAA Second Round rematch.
