Man arrested after fatal shooting in Carey

Carey, Ohio—Police say a man is dead and a suspect has been arrested following a Sunday shooting in Carey.

According to a press release from the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 7:57 a.m., deputies received a call from the Carey Police Department requesting assistance for a male subject seen walking down Newhard Street in his underwear.

As deputies responded to the scene, additional reports came in that the male subject was smashing house windows and carrying a gun.

When deputies arrived at Carey, they were confronted by a male subject who was allegedly holding a handgun and knife in the 500 block of North Vance Street, the statement said.

The man, identified as Melvin E. Nash, 51, of Carey, was arrested by law enforcement. Nash is currently being held in Wyandot County Jail.

Police later found a man with multiple gunshot wounds outside 514 North Vance Street. The man was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, where he died of his injuries. His name has not yet been released, pending notification from family members.

Detectives from the Wyandot County Major Crimes Unit have been assigned by the Carey Police Department to conduct the investigation.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been contacted to process the crime scene, and the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) is currently serving search warrants and conducting interviews, according to the statement.

The investigation was delayed after detectives found improvised explosive devices inside Nash’s home at 505 North Vance Street. The Lima/Allen County Bomb Squad and Toledo Bomb Squad were called to the scene and removed four suspect devices.

The crime scene is still being processed and the investigation is still active.

Charges are pending against Nash per Wyandot County District Attorney’s review.
